Aaron,

My problem is that I am the only Java programmer on staff and I have been
pulled to do other things :( We developed another project using XML a few
years back, but we parsed out the responses ourselves without using an XML
parser because the XML parser development at that time was in its infancy.

The project now consists of sending requests to and receiving requests from
cell phones using the Aligo WorkTrak system. I am working with them on getting
the documentation for the documents now...

Mike

Subject: RE: SOAP Requests

I just got done writing a piece of RPG code for a client that sends SOAP
requests to a Java web service and processes the responses in real-time for an
interactive green screen app.

The one thing I tell people when they are first getting into web services is
that there is no "magic" happening. It is only text being passed back and
forth. The "hard" part comes in all of the text technologies involved (i.e.
SOAP, WSDL, XSLT, XML, etc).

In the end RPG is very capable of doing XML, there just isn't a lot of good
tools out there to accomplish the task. On the other hand the Java and .NET
IDE's make it incredibly easy, but when something breaks a Java or .NET
developer may not know where to look for problems because they only understand
the façade of the whole thing and not the innerds.

There are pros and cons with both RPG and Java. If you have RPG knowledge then
it would make sense to go with RPG, but if you have Java knowledge and are
familiar with the tooling WDSc has to offer (literally a ton) then you could
check that out.

Home many web services are you looking to implement?

How big are the documents?

HTH,
Aaron Bartell

Subject: SOAP Requests

Has anyone created SOAP requests and processed the returns in RPG? We have a
project where we will need to interact with a SOAP web service and I was
wondering if anyone has done this in RPG or if Java or C or something is used
more...

Thanks

Mike
