Shannon,

You're lucky in a way; I still have to maintain RPG II programs. On the other hand a couple of points:

1. Secondary files and matching records are not limited to RPG II. You can still use both in RPG IV.

2. Any version of RPG gives one reason to thank God they have the cycle. In a past life I had to write a COBOL program to, in essence, do matching records - with level control breaks. Wanna compare nightmares?

Thank you, everyone! I've learned more about input secondary files now than I
ever wanted to know! And I got down on my knees and thanked God that I don't
ever have to program in RPG II anymore!

Multi-file Processing with No Match Fields When no match fields are used in multi-file processing, records are selected from one file at a time. When the records from one file are all processed, the records from the next file are selected. The files are selected in this order: Primary file, if specified Secondary files in the order in which they are described on the file description specifications. Can someone who might have used one more recently give me a Readers Digest overview of how/why this is used? I coukd look it up of course, but if someone knows off the top of their head....
