Remember that a date field knows what it is.  (It has no format we recognize
  It is never in *USA for example.)

So, when you display it, you choose the format you wish to use.  If you are
going to use *USA then you'd want to use a value of January 1st, 1940 as
your low value.

In looking at your original problem, I would have probably just added in a
condition on the RPG line saying "If  Field <> *blanks " and avoided this
whole area of discussion.
