With all due respect, the reason your shop is forcing you to keep using RPG/400 is because they WANT you to use "crude methods".

That's the whole idea... don't use methods that the 76 year old IT manager couldn't use when he was a teenager. And that includes date operations!

It doesn't make sense to add RPG IV's functionality to RPG III. If IBM did that for every feature that someone wanted, it would become identical to RPG IV.
