no. of rec in file through RPG

Is there anyway I can find out no. of records in RPGLE before I start reading 
that file in the program.
The requirment is first I want to see the number of records in the file , if 
there are records I want to read else end the program.
 
(No CLP and no SQL and no DSPFD)
