Can anyone make a suggestion as to where I can look for information on
how to convert a packed value when it is in a data buffer?

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by "in a data buffer". Typically, in RPG you'd use a data structure that contains the fields in the buffer, so there's no need to convert anything.

If the length of the packed field can vary, so you don't know what it is at runtime, you'll want to use the _LBCPYNV MI builtin. Search for that (either search the archives or google) and you should find some info about it.
