I wonder what happens if he chooses to uncomment the display file in the
program and make it user open, and then never open it?  It should compile,
and it should run without the requestor error?

If you're using the subfile fields in the program, the answer is a qualified
"no"...(that is, you could probably make the necessary program changes to
allocate a display device and use it from within the batch program, but that
would probably be not worth the hassle).
 
However, as an alternative you could build a sequential workfile in qtemp
that has the same fields as does the subfile.  Make the necessary code
changes in the program to use the workfile instead of the subfile.  Then
leave the display file closed, and open and use the workfile instead of the
subfile in the batch program.
