Dunno about "starting out" in assembler; that would leave us with far fewer programmers. But I certainly think that anybody who intends to make a career out of software, especially if he or she intends to write published works, should have a year of University-level instruction in assembler, and should then, in his or her spare time, learn the assembler of a different processor.

Then again, I've always thought that anybody who wants a career writing software should become passingly fluent in at least 4-5 different high-level languages, in at least 3 different HLL families. You need to know at least that many before you begin to realize that not even PL/I is a "language to end all other languages."
