How do you free them?  One by one, or as a group?

I believe that there are "hidden" objects (particularly java strings) that
cannot be freed by the one-at-a-time method.

You might want to post this one on the Java list.  While Barbara Morris
monitors this list, the Rochester java experts like Blair Wyman don't.  You
probably need one of those folks for definitive answers to some of your
questions.
