Again, I have to ask:  What shop uses newer data types like float, date, 
etc and yet insists on RPG400 instead of RPGLE?  Or, is it just this 
particular author's reluctance to leave their comfort zone?

However, if you like the pain of hitting your thumb with a hammer and wish 
to remain with RPG400, you could try creating a logical file or view over 
that file that CASTs the float field into a decimal field.

RPG/400 doesn't handle the float datatype under any circumstances.  If
you need to access the float data, use CVTRPGSRC to convert your program
to ILE RPG.
