That is true.  I guess, I mean to say, ODBC driver for some of the popular 
database such as Oracle, mySQL, MS SQL...

They did provide a very close resemblance.  It's called CLI.

Two options:
1) Third party program that resides on a PC
2) Use Java and a JDBC driver
