It would have been clearer with parens. This is why some languages have
an assignment operator and an equality comparison operator e.g. "=" and
"==". It's easy to mistake this for multiple assignment, but it's not.
An equivalent way would be:

if detsty = '1';
   *inu1 = *on;
endif;

All comparisons evaluate to *on or *off ('1' or '0').  You can assign
the value returned by a comparison to another variable.
