I always try to use the (E) extender, as in:

     c     ppmkey        chain(E)  ppmlc
     c                   If        %Error
     c*  Do Stuff for the error
     c                   EndIf

I don't believe this will pass the error 'up the chain', and it allows
you to handle the exception
