Two possiblities:

1) The indicator is defined in the DSPF at file level. So the indicator is 
available in all record formats.
2) The indicator is used to control EOF/NF condition. You chained to the file 
using the indicator. As it is an existing record, the indicator turned off.

My view on the problem.
