This is from the V5R3 API manual.  You've probably already read this but I'll 
send it anyway.  It sure sounds like that's where you would find the size.  Let 
us know how it turns out.

Substitution Variable Format

The following table lists the fields in the Substitution Variable format. For 
more information about each field, see Field Descriptions.

Thanks Rick for helping so far.  Now I know I am on the right track.  

I did the debug and found all the other things fine except SubLength and 
SubSize. (which I thought should have contained the field size.)
