Well, my feeling was right; here's one solution.

 if qt6desc > '';                                       //Search
argument from DSPF
   search =  '%' + %trimr(qt6desc) + '%';  //SEARCH is defined as VARYING  
     else;                                     
   search = '';                              
 endif;                                    

C+                      ct6desc like (case when :search  > '' then :search 
C+                           else ct6desc                                  
C+                           end)
