Understood.  There *have* been a number of improvements to subfiles since
V2R3, so hopefully someone else can jump in and make a recommendation.

Eh, I just remembered to check the midrange.com bookstore at
http://store.midrange.com/.  Search the page for "subfile".  I found three
hits that written for RPG-IV.
