Maybe this is a stupid answer, but couldn't you put the Canadian postal codes into a file with an index the way you want it sorted, then do a read next?

Then again, I am not sure I understand why you are doing what you are doing. For what reason do you need to know if the current postal code is +1 or +2 the previous postal code? Maybe I missed that post.
