If you only need the field descriptions of the file new file, then QUSLFLD
is a much easier API to deal with.

Thanks for that, I'll have a look at the documentation.

I want to avoid using DSPFFD to an outfile primarily for performance
reasons.  The program may be called for individual database files
interactively or for complete libraries in batch and I want to minimise the
time taken to run.  Plus, of course, there's the opportunity of getting to
grips with API programming - I've done a bit in the past year, but not
enough that I have to keep going back to the manuals and previous programs.

The QDBRTVFD API has that info in the Qdb_Qddfrefi data structure.

Though, personally, I'm having a hard time understanding why you wouldn't
want to use DSPFFD to an *outfile.
