I've just picked up this thread so I don't know what has been discussed prior 
to this e-mail.

You can read into a DS for externally described files, at least in RPGIV.

Here is an example.  Note that the read is done using the record format not the 
file name.

fCFP001    if   e           k Disk

d dsCFP001        ds                  LikeRec(CFP0011 :*Input)

SetLL dsCFKey CFP001; 
Read CFP0011 dsCFP001;

Well, I think I have found the answer... Apparently, you can only read
into a DS for a program-described file (per page 340, RPG/400
reference).  I had thought that you could read from an externally
described file into a data structure.

So much for that.
