%STATUS is not like %ERROR.
%ERROR is only set when the (E) operation extender is used.
%STATUS is always set when %ERROR is set.
But, %STATUS is also set by other mechanisms as well.
Barbara Morris told me about this a few months ago, but I don't remember
when/why/how those other situations are to cause %STATUS to change. Perhaps
something like a READ and hitting end-of-file will cause it to be set; have
to test it I guess.

Actually, you're right -- I'm confused. I'm getting %status mixed up with
"errno" -- the variable that you check to find out what went wrong in C
programs/functions.

Though, the docs say that %STATUS returns the "most recent value set" for
program or file status, which makes me think that if you don't specify (E)
that it may not reset it to zero.  But I haven't tested that...
