Speaking of SPAM, e-mail servers, and rules, I feel compelled to share a
recent experience with the list. Please forgive me this minor
intrusion, but I think I can provide a "fair and balanced" product
review.

I rarely respond to advertisements in the trade mags, but one recently
caught my eye for the "Barracuda SPAM Firewall", so I did some
research. The reviews were quite rave, and they offer a free trial, so
I gave them a shot. They gave me an online demo and then a couple of
days later sent me an actual demo unit (fully functional). You get 30
days to try it before you decide to buy it. Within an hour we had it
installed in the network and blocking spam. A week later, let me tell
you this thing is nothing short of awesome! I don't need the rest of
the thirty days to decide I'm definitely buying it.

Very little setup, very little administration, and extremely
inexpensive. Handle multiple domains with no problem. The coolest part
is that they have a subscription service that goes with it: they
actually monitor spam trends and provide blacklists, and virus
detection, which the server automatically updates every hour. You could
not even train the Bayesian filter and block an astounding amount of
SPAM. The system is also completely configurable, so for instance I
"whitelist" the Midrange mailing lists so the traffic always gets
through. You can white/black list IPs, domains, specific e-mail
addresses, the works. And the admin interface is exceptional.

As for price, I think it is too cheap. They could charge double and
easily earn their pay. There are three levels - the top one will handle
literally millions of e-mail addresses and has a bunch of additional
stuff I don't have access to, because I bought the smallest version.
Prices start at $1199 with the heaviest duty version costing $3499. The
annual subscription I mentioned is $299 (and remember that includes
Virus protection).

Again, sorry if this sounds like a commercial... I guess it's more of an
endorsement... I'm not associated with them in any way, I get no money
from them for any reason, I just wanted to share a positive experience
since I know we are all entrenched in the war on SPAM...

If you are interested, here is a link to their site. All their sales
are regional, so you should get someone in your area to respond to you
if you contact them.
