I tried to do the same thing before and did not find a way for it.

The closest method I know of is to use Program-To-System field to control the 
field attribute.  The program can exam the hex value to determine the 
attribute.  (Which is kind of like the hidden field that you are doing).

whatever) of a field or record in a subfile? We're using hidden fields
