As opposed to what?  A 'select' statement does one of two things:
1 - A single fetch
2 - Fetches a result set into (in RPG it's a MODS).

The cursor / fetch pair is used when you are retrieving multiple rows 
individually and you wish to do processing on each row.

Making a choice between using just a fetch, or a cursor, is not usually 
done based on performance considerations, but on the application 
requirements.  Otherwise you might as well ask the question "Should I use 
a %subst or the MULT operation to increase performance?"

Performance of SQL






I want to improve the performance of my program which uses Interactive 
SQL. I am at present using 'SELECT' statements. Will  Cursor or Fetch 
increase the response time?
