Reading the RPG reference manual, seems like %lookup is using sequence search logic to find the matching element and will always search the entire array unless passing the start index and numelements. If this is true, SORTA doesn't really help speed up the search. Is that correct?

The RPG Reference manual doesn't specify the implementation of %LOOKUPxx(). But the algorithm has been described here and elsewhere. In a nutshell, two different algorithms are used. First, if the array is unsequenced, a sequential search is used. But, if the array is defined with either ASCEND or DESCEND, then a binary search is used.
