In most places I have replaced my use of SQLCOD with SQLSTT.  HOWEVER 
there are a few places where more than one SQLCOD is equal to the same 
SQLSTT.  And in one application I performed a different operation based on 
which of the two SQLCOD's I received.

What is the difference between SQLSTT and SQLCOD?  I have always used 
SQLCOD
then if it is +-100 (don't remember which) then there is no results, if it
is 0 everything is okay, if it is anything else, then there is a problem.

Two suggestions:
1) In debug, look at sqlstatement to make certain there is a properly 
formed
statement.  I catch a lot of my oopsies this way.
2) Check the value of SQLSTT after the PREPARE FROM:

C/EXEC SQL
C+ PREPARE S1 FROM :sqlstatement
C/END-EXEC

if sqlstt <> '00000'
// uh-oh...
