In the past, I'd always just created an empty copy.  I was hoping that with
the new extfile keyword, I could finally avoid that.

In my experience, having to do an override before compiling is unweildy and
confusing to anyone who comes along later.

As you said, you can:

a) In the RPG program (MYPGM), you should have two entries in the "F"
definition: one for FILE_1 and another one for FILE_2.

b) Outside the program, execute two OVRDBF commands, one per each file:
* OVRDBF FILE(FILE_1) TOFILE(MYLIB1/MYFILE)
* OVRDBF FILE(FILE_2) TOFILE(MYLIB2/MYFILE)

c) Compile the program with these active overrides.

d) Do the appropriate entries specified on step "A" in a CLP (MYCLP)
before calling the program MYPGM.

e) Run MYCLP.

This should work...hope this helps...
