Null is an unfortunate word because it means several things to different
programmers.  C/ASCII programmers think of Null as being x'00' - a string
terminator.  SQL programmers think of NULL as a column attribute meaning 'no
value assigned.'  And then there is a group who confuse x'00' with x'40'...

In your example, I would probably define bMsgCode as varying.  Then it only
contains '12' and nothing after it.  Translating it to ASCII is another
issue.  You probably don't really want to send a string of x'00' to the
other side; perhaps only one at the end of the '12'.  If that is the case, I
would simply concatenate x'00' to the end of bMsgCode.
