Hm.  I've used data areas in very high volume situations and not had that
problem.  Here is code that works for me.

D SWTEND          S              1
C     *DTAARA       DEFINE                  SWTEND
C     *LOCK         IN        SWTEND
C                   MOVE      '0'           SWTEND
C                   OUT       SWTEND

To read the data area without locking it, I just do an IN operation.

How did you have the data area defined?
