Just out of curiosity, how many iterations did your tests do?

It seems logical to me that 20I 0 would be the fastest since, after all,
it's a 64-bit machine! Just load into a register, and store that register
back to another location.

Back when we added support for 8-byte integer numeric, we decided to use 8-byte integer and unsigned intermediate values (up from 4-byte temps) to make things less confusing for the programmer. At the time, I did a bit of performance comparison, and it turned out that the difference between 8-byte and 4-byte integer/unsigned operations was barely measurable.
