That is an interesting comment Ron - but regrettably in my experience you
are unusual.  Most developers program to the lowest common denominator in
their user base - even though that means that they cannot use newer more
efficient methods.

The irony is that in every case where I have been involved (which means two
major software vendors) - when the vendor finally gave up and forced the
users to move to anew release the users applauded!  Conventional wisdom was
that they would rebel and refuse to move - in practice in both cases the
fears were unfounded - the users were looking for an excuse to justify an
upgrade to an in-service release!
