sorry, i was blind - you did include field sizes and I just didn't see 
them.

in the 1 step example, this portion of your expression: 

%dec(transno:%size(transNo):0) + 1

...evaluates to an 11s0 field.   The reason is that a transno of 
9,999,999,999 + 1 would equal 10,000,000,000 and the intermediate 
workfield created by the %dec() bif must be large enough for the maximum 
this value could be.

my advice is to create a subprocedure and define the 'wrk' field there.
