Using files as externally described as program decsribed -- RPG400-L

Hi all,

Iam analysing an RPG/400 program in which  a file RPMF1 (which is externally 
described and having more than 20 fields) is program decsribed with 6fields 
only.

 I found in external description the record length is 208

And in program described the record length is 218.

 is this correct?can we have more Record length for an externally described  
file when iam using it as program described in my RPG?
