Sounds like a data structure will do what you want.  The technique would
have worked on S/38 RPG.  Normally, when I run into one of these things,
it's either an old limitation in the database design or it's some sort of
data mapping deal, like an embedded sequence number inside a file name
(FILE0001, FILE0002, etc.)  It just seems more natural for me to use a data
structure for this sort of task.  Thought I'd add a different spin on the
thread...
