Correction:

myDateStr will equal '2000-01-01', in *ISO format, I just left out the
dashes when I was typing.  Also, if your DATFMT is not *ISO, then you
could either reformat the DS accordingly or instruct %date() to use
*ISO...

c                   eval       myDate = %date( myDateStr : *ISO )
