The code would run the same on all EBCDIC systems, including the S/3, S/32,
S/34, and S/36.  I don't know offhand what VARPG would do though.

However, as others have noted, the most likely reason this code existed was to
"salt" the routine with code which is highly unlikely to appear in someone ele's
code by coincidence.  So it is probably just a type of "signature" to help
identify misappropriated code.
