Who said it died out?  There are many VSE systems out there still running
RPG !!  Assembler, Fortran, COBOL and later PL/I became the main programming
languages on mainframes - I suspect that RPG usage declined as the
capability of the midrange machines increased to a point where they could
handle the volumes.  I've talked to a number over the last few years who
were considering migrating to the 400 - mostly because VSE is going away.
