The second EXFMT is probably writing over the message.  Try putting a timer
into the program instead of another EXFMT and see if the message stays
longer.

The code in my original post is a distillation of what I am trying to do.
It serves to test changes, without any excess baggage.  I might be wrong,
but I believe the program does not end until control returns from the second
EXFMT toward the end of the program.  What I would like is to see my message
until the user presses enter from the screen displayed by that second EXFMT.
Any help is appreciated.
