then either
alpha = *all'0';
or
alpha = *off;

followed by 
evalr alpha = alpha + %char(numeric);

would work?

Technically, neither of these work since figurative constants aren't 
allowed with the catenation operator. Ideally, you should have some 
solution that's independent of both the target of the assignment 
aand the size of the numeric variable.
