Good suggestion Rick, but just in case the size of ALPHA may change can
you do:
                 EvalR alpha = *all'0' + %Char(numeric);

Technically, if you want to mess with someone's mind, the book says:
*ON/*OFF
*ON is all ones ('1' or X'F1'). *OFF is all zeros ('0' or X'F0'). Both are
only valid for character fields.

So, therefore
                 EvalR alpha = *off + %Char(numeric);
should work.

%EDITC(numeric:'X') is no good since the result doesn't include the
decimal point. You'd have to insert the decimal point back into the
string. The only way to get what Andrew wants is with an edit word,
but then, Andrew wants to avoid editing.

Hans,

This can be accomplished without an edit word using this statement:

                 EvalR alpha = '000000000' + %Char(numeric);
