Refer to James' and Scott's additional comments, and things should become
clearer.  My only nitpick with James' explanation is:

a true indicator field can only contain 0 or 1, but in the general sense I
prefer to think of TRUE as meaning <> 0 instead of meaning = 1.  In some
language TRUE is stored as -1 (all bits on) and thinking of any non-zero value
as TRUE tends to make rules seem more consistent across various languages.
