I missed the original post or something like that.

There is a MI instruction that convert character number strings to numeric 
variables. At www.mcpressonline look for Bob Cozzi's solution of 31 Juliy 2002, 
at www.iseriesnetwork.com at one of the ClubTech's newsletter of January 2002.
