After further analyzing the source, I think the fact that I exclude the %trim 
%bif from the select statement might be the problem.  Not quite sure, however, 
I will start small and build up, utilizing the error codes as well.  Thanks for 
a great example!

Basically the null indicators are there to stop a job log entry from being
written. This procedure runs numerous times and before I put the null
indicators in, the job was creating huge joblogs.
