I agree, but that wasn't the situation here. I'd like "that" built-in
function howeve. :)

Bob,

 The downside to XLATE is that it's a one to one relationship.  So if
you wanted to pare repeating characters to one (i.e. 'XXXXYY' should
become 'XY'), XLATE would ont do the trick.
