Thank you for the responses.  I am aware of the dynamic prepare option.
Static SQL statements offer a number of benefits in performance and error
checking, and I was hoping, by the debug message I had seen about host
variable in the order by clause, that it was something new we could do.
We're at V5R2 by the way.

What about looking at dynamic preparation of the select? You could build a
character string and supply the value for the ORDER BY as a variable.
