There is some great information available for free from IBM's website on
just this type of operation.  For joining, the programming manual has the
best info.

Goto:
http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/pubs/html/as400/online/homeeng1.htm

Then click on your OS version.  From the menu select Programming and then
SQL.  You should then have some manuals to choose from/download.

Here is a snippet from the Programming Manual as an example:
  SELECT EMPNO, LASTNAME, PROJNO
    FROM CORPDATA.EMPLOYEE LEFT OUTER JOIN CORPDATA.PROJECT
          ON EMPNO = RESPEMP
    WHERE LASTNAME > 'S'
