I always overrode the currency symbol to '(' and then used it to float the
position of the left parentheses, with a static ')' symbol.  Instead of
conditioning the edit code / word, I'd condition overlapping fields - one for
positive numbers and the other for negative numbers.

In RPG IV, I use %editc() to populate a character field to avoid any
conditioning in the output.  You can also override the currency symbol at the
statement level using %editc/%editw, instead of just the H-spec level
