First, I go to college and get some training.  Then I work for someone
else who has enough people from which I can learn what they do.

I have an ancient System Analysis book from college.  I can look up the
details and maybe you can get a copy.  It is easy reading.  Very dated.  I
think I remember something like staying away from newer languages like RPG
until they get more years under their belt.  (No, I am not quite that old
- the S/36 was just a year or two away.)
