Hello  Mark,

If you want messages from the joblog, take a look at the List Joblog API, that 
stores the result in a user space.

MC (now extinct) has published a tool for this API (RCVJLMSG). The article can 
be viewed at www.mcpressonline.com and was written by Ted Holt.

If the code is not available to download  I can send it to you off line.
