Actually many are developing gui apps with rpg doing the main business
logic & database serving (along with sql). This is what rpg is good at.
With the free net.data software for the gui front end, and rpg on the back
end, there is no need for something like odbc, and building fat clients.
The client only needs a browser.
imho

By using Ms-Access also you can develop reports to
some extent, but it does not provide all the features.
You will be stucked in between if you have any complex
report. And moreover, in some complex reports you have
got to do some programming also, like passing
variables, calculations etc which report writers does
not support, that's why we selected powerbuilder and
developed lots of applications.

With regard to ODBC and DB2, you will be connecting to
the AS400 DB2 thru ODBC. ODBC(Open database
connectivity) is a software from Microsoft, used to
connect to the different databases.

You know, you cannot develop GUI based applications
using rpg.
